St. Godric’s Hymn (Sainte Nicolæs, Godes druð) [2022 mix]

about

St. Godric's hymn in original Middle English.

Godric was a renowned hermit and — unofficially — a saint of the Middle Ages, known for his kindness towards animals. One story tells of his hiding a stag from hunters in a forest, and he was an early proponent of vegetarianism. Furthermore, he wrote music and lived, so it was reputed, beyond the age of one hundred — remarkable for a man in the twelfth century.

lyrics

Sainte Nicolæs Godes druð
tymbre us faire scone hus;
At þi burth, at þi bare
Sainte Nicolæs, bring us wel þare.

Saint Nicholas, God’s beloved,
Build for us a fair bright house;
At the birth, at the bier,
Saint Nicholas, bring us safely there.
