The Fifty Pence Piece Room

by Sunex Amures

/

about

The derelict Elizabethan estate of Scadbury Park.

My older brother and his cocky adolescent cronies would sneak through the overgrown undergrowth and across the shallow moat that encircled the forbidden grounds of 'Scads Manor' at darkfall, to hang out and smoke cigarettes among the ruins without being seen.

He told me of a single room that remained roofed, structurally intact, within the crumbling brickwork — a room with seven sides; they named it the Fifty Pence Piece Room.

The children dared each other who could stay as long as possible within the dank, unlit walls of this forgotten corner of the house. No-one ever lingered for long. On one illicit sojourn, they found recently-extinguished candles.

They never went back after that.
