The Bell-Tane

about

A terrible tale for Hallowe'en.

The identity of the man who became the Bell-Tane is now unknown, but his cruelty and barbarism was once notorious among his community. The severity of his crimes was matched — as far as could be — by the brutality of his execution; sentenced to be only half-drawn and partly-quartered; already a tall man, they broke his joints and stretched him to nine feet in length. As they drew out his entrails, he berated them with vengeful, agonised curses all the while.

Finding no end for the fiend in their sadistic butchery, someone decided to set him ablaze. The bloodthirsty madness of the mob and his own fiery hatred suffused his frame — a dark malevolence became manifest and fused as one with the flames. The body burned at length to largely blackened and calcined stumps, but no further — it somehow refused to become fully crumbled and ashen. Hours passed, and as the semi-corpse cooled, the crowd faded away; blood-lust had given way to a quiet, but abject horror as the mangled remains continued to move slightly from within their indiscernible shape. Many claimed to still hear gargled cursing from the dread form.

The watchmen came to collect the body the following morning. But the Bell-Tane — for that was the name they would soon call it — had vanished. Days later, the murders started again.

The last accounts of the Bell-Tane were recorded as part of the casually lurid playground tattle of schoolchildren in the late seventies and early eighties.
