The Last Of The Gentlemen

about

A song about several people, one of whom may have been me at times. Weirdly, there are actually quite a lot of them about. But maybe not for much longer.

lyrics

From the way you look to the way you are,
well, you had him hooked right from the very start.
With the things you do and the things you say
even just for seconds almost every day.

But he wakes up feeling heavy, feeling sad,
because if he showed his feelings for you,
it makes him out to be a cad!

So he’ll nurse his pint while he waits in line
(manages to keep his eyes up every time).
Keeps himself in check; never heard to swear,
yet you know there’s something burning under there.

While the others seem to just be hitting on you
he’s bringing something different to the table;
I think you know his aim is true.

Chorus:
So here he comes now, walking down the street
with his heart trailing down 'round about his feet,
hard to miss him: The Last Of The Gentlemen.
So here he comes now, walking down the street,
looks you in the eye when he says: “Pleased to meet you!”
— The Last Of The Gentlemen.

Knows a joke or two, he can make ‘em laugh
but he wants a bit more on his epitaph.
Riven with regret, years he can’t reclaim,
he’s an old man playing at the longest game.

Table booked for one; the waiters know his name.
He’s doomed to walk the earth forever: The Last Of The Gentlemen

Walks you to the stop, there’s a hug goodbye,
always wanting more although he’d never try.
Just a moment shared of fleeting tenderness.
Why do all the bastards have the confidence?

So ends the story, he lives in his head.
The world whirls around him; no-one’s in his bed.

Chorus:
So there he goes now, walking down the street
with his heart trailing down 'round about his feet,
hard to miss him: The Last Of The Gentlemen.
So there he goes now, walking down the street,
looks you in the eye when he says: “Pleased to meet you!”
— The Last Of The Gentlemen.
